Who We Are
The Senate Hispanic Research Council (SHRC) is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. It was established in 1993 by the Hispanic members of the Texas Senate along with other key state and civic leaders to provide educational and leadership opportunities to all segments of the Hispanic community by supporting active participation at all levels of government.
We are dedicated to providing emerging leaders with rewarding opportunities and enriching experiences, committed to development and empowerment through essential learning in the Texas Legislature. For that reason, we advance our mission through the Senator Gregory Luna Legislative Scholars and Fellows Program.
Participants in the Senator Gregory Luna Legislative Scholars and Fellows Program gain invaluable experience and exposure to the Texas Senate by serving as full-time legislative staffers during Texas legislative sessions. Scholars and Fellows receive a monthly stipend to compensate them for their work and assist them with living expenses.
This transformative fellowship program is named after the late Texas Senator Gregory Luna. Senator Luna represented Bexar County in the Texas Legislature from 1985-1999. The Senator was a one time chair of the Senate Hispanic Caucus. During his tenure, he served as a champion of the people and strove to break down barriers and build pathways of opportunity for Texas’ less fortunate citizens.
