fundraising target

Austin, TX – Sixteen of Texas’ most
promising Hispanic leaders selected for the Senator
Gregory Luna Legislative Scholars and Fellows Program, a
prestigious internship program designed to introduce
undergraduate and graduate college students to public
service and state government, were honored at a
fundraiser last week.
Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst, whose
office also sponsors a Luna Scholar, gave the keynote
address. When Lt. Governor Dewhurst learned that the
program was short of reaching their fundraising target,
he chipped in an additional $10,000.
“We were thrilled that Lt. Governor
Dewhurst was so generous,” said Frank Santos, Chair of
the Luna Scholar Program. “This significant
contribution impacts the lives of our scholars and
fellows.”
Each year, the Senate Hispanic Research
Council (SHRC) offers up to 16 promising Hispanic
Americans from across the state the opportunity to work
in the Texas Capitol during the legislative session.
The fellows gain invaluable experience and develop
leadership skills as full-time legislative assistants in
the Texas Senate, as well as the office of the
Lieutenant Governor. The 2007 class will participate in
weekly leader development sessions and hear from
respected members and community leaders on the
legislative process.
“It is a privilege to watch the
development of our future leaders,” said Sarah Saenz,
SHRC Luna Scholars Program Director. “They arrive with
questions and curiosity and leave with the knowledge and
tools to make a difference.”
